[1] [[To the chief Musician  Michtam  of David,  when the Philistines  took  him in Gath.]]  Be merciful  unto me, O God:  for man  would swallow me up;  he fighting  daily  oppresseth  [2] Mine enemies  would daily  swallow  me up: for they be many  that fight  against me, O thou most High.

Contextual Meaning

David began this prayer with a call for divine help and an explanation of why he needed it. His enemies were constantly attacking him. As the Lord"s anointed, David had a right to expect God"s assistance.
