[9] And  it came to pass  in  those  days,  that Jesus  came  from  Nazareth  of Galilee,  and  was baptized  of  John  in  Jordan.  [10] And  straightway  coming up  the water,  the heavens  opened,  and  the Spirit  a dove  descending  him:  [11] And  there came  a voice  from  heaven,  saying, Thou  beloved  Son,  in  I am well pleased. 

What does Mark 1:9-11 Mean?

Contextual Meaning

Mark next recorded two events that immediately preceded the beginning of Jesus" public ministry, His baptism and His temptation. The first of these events signaled His appearing as Messiah and His induction into that office. Mark simply recorded the fact of Jesus" baptism and two attendant events that confirmed that He was the Messiah.
