What does John 18:35 Mean?

Verse Meaning

Pilate"s reply clarified that he had no personal interest in Jesus" kingship, and he was indignant that Jesus would suggest such a thing. He simply wanted to understand what Jesus was claiming in view of the Sanhedrin"s accusation. Beyond that, he wanted to discover why the Jewish leaders were so intent on doing away with Jesus. His question, "Am I a Jew?" sarcastically denied that Jewish matters such as Jesus" kingship were of any interest to him personally. Ironically Jesus was Pilate"s King. [1] Pilate"s comment about Jesus" own people handing Him over to him confirmed John"s statement that Jesus came unto His own, but His own did not receive Him (1:11).

Context Summary

John 18:33-40 - The King Of Truth
There was a tone of satire in Pilate's question: "Thou poor, worn, tear-stained outcast, forsaken by every friend in this hour of need-art thou a king?" Human ears have never heard more majestic words than our Lord's reply. But when He said, My kingdom is not of this world, He did not mean that it had nothing to do with this world, but that it did not originate here. It has descended from heaven, and seeks to bring the inspiration, principles, and methods of heaven into all the provinces of human activity. The one conspicuous proof of its absolutely foreign origin is its refusal to employ force. We do not fight, but sacrifice and suffer, for its maintenance. Our Lord therefore hastened to show that His Kingdom is based on the manifestation of the truth. There is no soul of man which is pure and true that does not recognize Christ's royalty, as King of Truth, when it hears Him speak. [source]

Greek Commentary for John 18:35

Am I a Jew? [μητι εγω Ιουδαιος ειμι]
Proud and fine scorn on Pilate‘s part at the idea that he had a personal interest in the question. Vehement negation implied. Cf. John 4:29 for μητι — mēti in a question. The gulf between Jew and Gentile yawns wide here. Nation For παρεδωκαν — paredōkan see John 18:30. What hast thou done? First aorist active indicative of ποιεω — poieō Blunt and curt question. “What didst thou do?” “What is thy real crime?” John‘s picture of this private interview between Pilate and Jesus is told with graphic power.
