John 17:6-19

John 17:6-19

[6] I have manifested  name  unto the men  which  thou gavest  out of  the world:  thine  and  thou gavest  them  and  they have kept  word.  [7] Now  they have known  that  all things  whatsoever  thou hast given  of  [8] For  I have given  unto them  the words  which  thou gavest  and  they  have received  them, and  have known  surely  that  I came out  from  and  they have believed  that  thou  didst send  [9] pray  for  them:  I pray  not  for  the world,  but  for  them which  thou hast given  for  [10] And  all  mine  thine,  and  thine  are mine;  and  I am glorified  in  them.  [11] And  I am  no more  in  the world,  but  in  the world,  and  come  to  Holy  Father,  keep  through  name  those  whom  thou hast given  that  one,  as  [12] While  with  them  in  kept  them  in  name:  those that  thou gavest  I have kept,  and  none  of  them  is lost,  the son  of perdition;  that  the scripture  might be fulfilled.  [13] And  now  come I  to  and  I speak  in  the world,  that  they might have  my  joy  fulfilled  in  [14] have given  them  word;  and  the world  hath hated  them,  because  not  of  the world,  even as  am  not  of  the world.  [15] I pray  not  that  thou shouldest take  them  out of  the world,  but  that  thou shouldest keep  them  from  the evil.  [16] not  of  the world,  even as  am  not  of  the world.  [17] Sanctify  them  through  truth:  thy  word  truth.  [18] As  thou hast sent  into  the world,  I also  sent  them  into  the world.  [19] And  their  sakes  sanctify  myself,  that  they  also  be sanctified  through  the truth.

What does John 17:6-19 Mean?

Contextual Meaning

Jesus" glorification depended on the wellbeing of those whom the Father had given to Him ( John 17:2). Consequently Jesus prayed for them too. He made several requests for them but first expressed the reasons He was praying for them and why He wanted the Father to grant His requests.
The length of this section of the prayer suggests that Jesus had greater concern for His disciples" welfare than for His own.
"Jesus prayed for His disciples before He chose them ( Luke 6:12), during His ministry ( John 6:15), at the end of His ministry ( Luke 22:32), here ( John 17:6-19), and later in heaven ( Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25)." [1]
Moreover in view of their weaknesses, they were in great need of God"s grace to sustain them in the future. It was God"s keeping power rather than their strength that made Jesus" confident as He prayed for them.
