Study Notes

came
The tense is future: "From him Judah shall be the cornerstone Exodus 17:6 . from him the nail Isaiah 22:23 ; Isaiah 22:24 from him the battle-bow," etc. The whole scene is of the events which group about the deliverance of the Jews in Palestine in the time of the northern invasion under the "Beast"; Daniel 7:8 ; Revelation 19:20 and "Armageddon,"; Revelation 16:14 ; Revelation 19:17 .
The final deliverance is wholly effected by the return of the Lord Revelation 19:11-21 , but previously He strengthens the hard-pressed Israelites; Micah 4:13 ; Zechariah 9:13-15 ; Zechariah 10:5-7 ; Zechariah 12:2-6 ; Zechariah 14:14 .
That there may have been a precursive fulfilment in the Maccabean victories can neither be affirmed nor denied from Scripture.

Verse Meaning

From the house of Judah would come the cornerstone of the building (kingdom) He would build, namely, Messiah (cf. Zechariah 3:9; Genesis 49:10; Psalm 118:22; Isaiah 28:16; Jeremiah 30:21; Acts 4:11; Ephesians 2:20; 1 Peter 2:1-8). The cornerstone (Heb. pinnah) was a figure of a leader who would stabilize a nation and keep it from sliding down a slippery slope (cf. Judges 20:2; 1 Samuel 14:38; Isaiah 19:13). Messiah would also be like a tent peg (Heb. yathed) in that He would hold the tent (kingdom) firmly in place (cf. Judges 4:21-22; Isaiah 22:23-24; Acts 15:16). The Hebrew word also describes a peg inside a tent on which people hung beautiful things that glorified their homes (cf. Zechariah 6:13; Isaiah 22:22-24; Ezekiel 15:3). Messiah would also be Yahweh"s bow by which He would destroy His enemies (cf. Zechariah 9:13; Psalm 45:5; Revelation 19:11-16). All these figures picture the strong, stable, victorious, and trustworthy nature of Messiah"s rule.
"This verse constitutes one of the most far-reaching and meaningful Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament in which the seer summarizes a number of declarations by the former prophet [1], setting forth the character and ministry of Israel"s Redeemer-King." [2]
From the house of Judah would also go forth (depart) every oppressing ruler (Heb. noges, cf. Zechariah 9:8; Exodus 3:7; Isaiah 3:12; Isaiah 14:2; Isaiah 60:17; Daniel 11:20).
"Because the Messiah intervenes in the manner to be noted, every oppressor will depart from Judah. Cause and effect are clearly stated." [3]

Context Summary

Zechariah 10:1-12 - A Lowly Deliverer Brings Peace
Jesus must be King first, then Savior. He is lowly; His steed is not the richly caparisoned warhorse, but the humble ass; He needs no weapon to overthrow His foes, because as Priest He speaks peace. The peasantry had taken shelter in the rock hewn mountain cisterns; but they might cherish hope, because they had been redeemed by the blood of the covenant, and God would see to it that that redemption was made effective. Before the advent of the King, the prison-doors would open, and at His word the imprisoned should go forth. How great are His goodness and beauty!
In Zechariah 10:1-12 we have a reference to the successful stand made by Judas Maccabaeus and his brethren against Antiochus. They were to tread them down as the mire of the streets; Joseph and Judah would be reunited and after their far-spread sowing over the world, the scattered tribes would ultimately return as bees to the call of the bee-farmer.
