1 Samuel 11:1-15
Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee. And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel. And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee. Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept. read more And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent. And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad. Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you. And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together. And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death. And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel. Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there. And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. show less |

1 Samuel 3:1-21
And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. read more And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever. And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision. Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I. And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee. And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good. And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD. And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD. show less |

And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name samuel, <i>sayingi>, Because i have asked him of the LORD.
And the child samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; <i>there wasi> no open vision.
And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God <i>wasi>, and samuel was laid down <i>to sleepi>;
And the LORD called yet again, samuel. And samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here <i>ami> i; for thou didst call me. And he answered, i called not, my son; lie down again.
And the LORD called samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here <i>ami> i; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.
And the LORD said to samuel, Behold, i will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.
And samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It <i>isi> the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.
And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that samuel <i>wasi> established <i>to bei> a prophet of the LORD.
And samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, <i>theni> put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured <i>iti> out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.
And samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered <i>it fori> a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.
Then samuel took a stone, and set <i>iti> between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.
And the LORD said unto samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that i should not reign over them.
And they went up into the city: <i>andi> when they were come into the city, behold, samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.
And when samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom i spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.
Then Saul drew near to samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, i pray thee, where the seer's house <i>isi>.
And samuel answered Saul, and said, i <i>ami> the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow i will let thee go, and will tell thee all that <i>isi> in thine heart.
And samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which <i>werei> about thirty persons.
And samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which i gave thee, of which i said unto thee, Set it by thee.
And the cook took up the shoulder, and <i>thati> which <i>wasi> upon it, and set <i>iti> before Saul. And <i>samueli> said, Behold that which is left! set <i>iti> before thee, <i>andi> eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since i said, i have invited the people. So Saul did eat with samuel that day.
And when they were come down from the high place into the city, <i>samueli> communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that i may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and samuel, abroad.
<i>Andi> as they were going down to the end of the city, samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that i may shew thee the word of God.
Then samuel took a vial of oil, and poured <i>iti> upon his head, and kissed him, and said, <i>Is iti> not because the LORD hath anointed thee <i>to bei> captain over his inheritance?
And it was <i>soi>, that when he had turned his back to go from samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that <i>they werei> no where, we came to samuel.
And samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that <i>there isi> none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.
Then samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote <i>iti> in a book, and laid <i>iti> up before the LORD. And samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent <i>themi> throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
And the people said unto samuel, Who <i>isi> he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.
And samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, i have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.
And samuel said unto the people, <i>It isi> the LORD that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
And all the people said unto samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins <i>thisi> evil, to ask us a king.
And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that samuel <i>had appointedi>: but samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
And samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because i saw that the people were scattered from me, and <i>thati> thou camest not within the days appointed, and <i>thati> the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;
And samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people <i>that werei> present with him, about six hundred men.
samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee <i>to bei> king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD.
It repenteth me that i have set up Saul <i>to bei> king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.
And samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed <i>bei> thou of the LORD: i have performed the commandment of the LORD.
And samuel said, What <i>meanethi> then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which i hear?
Then samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and i will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
And samuel said, When thou <i>wasti> little in thine own sight, <i>wasti> thou not <i>madei> the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?
And Saul said unto samuel, Yea, i have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
And samuel said, Hath the LORD <i>as greati> delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey <i>isi> better than sacrifice, <i>andi> to hearken than the fat of rams.
And Saul said unto samuel, i have sinned: for i have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because i feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
And samuel said unto Saul, i will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.
And samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, <i>that isi> better than thou.
And the LORD said unto samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing i have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, i will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for i have provided me a king among his sons.
And samuel said, How can i go? if Saul hear <i>iti>, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, i am come to sacrifice to the LORD.
But the LORD said unto samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because i have refused him: for <i>the LORD seethi> not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
And samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all <i>thyi> children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and samuel standing <i>asi> appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.
Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well that <i>isi> in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where <i>arei> samuel and David? And <i>onei> said, Behold, <i>they bei> at Naioth in Ramah.
And he stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Wherefore they say, <i>Isi> Saul also among the prophets?
Then said the woman, Whom shall i bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up samuel.
And when the woman saw samuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou <i>arti> Saul.
And he said unto her, What form <i>isi> he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he <i>isi> covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it <i>wasi> samuel, and he stooped with <i>hisi> face to the ground, and bowed himself.
And samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, i am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore i have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what i shall do.
All these <i>which werei> chosen to be porters in the gates <i>werei> two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and samuel the seer did ordain in their set office.
And all that samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah, had dedicated; <i>andi> whosoever had dedicated <i>any thing, it wasi> under the hand of Shelomith, and of his brethren.
Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they <i>arei> written in the book of samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,
Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and samuel stood before me, <i>yeti> my mind <i>couldi> not <i>bei> toward this people: cast <i>themi> out of my sight, and let them go forth.
And after that he gave <i>unto themi> judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until samuel the prophet.
And what shall i more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and <i>ofi> Barak, and <i>ofi> Samson, and <i>ofi> Jephthae; <i>ofi> David also, and samuel, and <i>ofi> the prophets:
